The United States flag consists of white stars on a blue canton (the top upper inside quarter of a flag) with red and white horizontal stripes.
Since 1960 there have been 50 white stars –representing each state.
There are 7 red stripes and 6 white stripes. These 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies.
The red color on the flag symbolizes hardiness and valor, the white symbolizes purity and innocence, and the blue represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
According to the U.S. Department of State, the names of the flag’s official colors are old glory red, white, and old glory blue.
Some nicknames for the United States flag include Stars and Stripes, Old Glory, and The Star-Spangled Banner.
